1.TANGKUBAN PERAHU

A long time ago, there was a young woman who had nice parents. Her dad was a regular human being, but her mum was a witch. Because of this, she would never get old. There was a man who had different parents also. They met each other, and after a while they fell in love and got married.
After a year, the girl had a baby boy. They really loved their son. One day, the father took his son to go hunting for a deer using a bow and arrow. Accidentally, the son shot the arrow in the wrong direction and killed his own father. He went crazy, and when he told his mother about this, she was really mad with him. His mother hit him on the head with a rock and kicked him out of the house.
Several years later, the mother finally found another man. They fell in love. The man wanted to marry her. After the man took a shower, he asked her to brush his hair. While she was brushing his hair, she saw a mark on his head. She asked him what happened since he had a mark on his head. He said, “ I was hit by my mother.” She really was disturbed by this, but she just kept quiet because she knew that was her own son. Her son still didn’t know that she was his own mother. She decided not to marry him, but the man kept forcing her to marry him.
Finally, she made a deal with the man. The deal was she would marry him, but first he had to build a ship and it needed to be done before the sun rose. He started building the ship. He built it by himself because he had half of her witch power. When she found out that the ship would be done soon, and it would be done before sunrise, she woke all the chicken and made the chicken start crowing. When the son heard the crow of the chicken, he was really sad because he thought he hadn’t finished the ship before the sun rose. He realized that he was not going to marry her, so he kicked the ship with all his power. They ended up going separate ways.

2. JACK AND THE BEANSTALK

Once upon a time, there was a poor widow who had an only son named Jack. They were so poor that they didn’t have anything except a cow. When the cow had grown too old, his mother sent Jack to market to sell it. On the way to the market, Jack met a butcher who had some beautiful beans in his hand. The butcher told the boy that the beans were of great value and persuaded the silly to sell the cow for the beans.
Jack brought them happily. When he told his mother about this, his mother became so angry that she threw the beans out of the window. When Jack woke up in the morning, he felt the sun shinning into a part of his room but all the rest was quite dark and shady.
So, he jumped out from the window. What did he see? The beanstalk grew up quite close past Jack’s window. He opened the window and jumped out to the beanstalk, which ran up just like a big ladder. He climbed …. and climbed till at last he reached the sky. While looking around, he saw a very huge castle. He was very amazed.
Then, Jack walked along the path leading to the castle. There was a big tall woman on the doorstep. Jack greeted her asked for the giantess mercy to give him breakfast, because he felt very hungry. Although the giantess grumbled at first, finally she also gave Jack a hunk of bread and cheese and a jug of milk.
Jack had not finished when suddenly the whole house began to tremble with the noise of someone’s coming. “Oh, it is my husband”!, cried the giantess. “What on earth shall I do”? Hastily, the giantess opened a very big cupboard and hid Jack there.

3.THE MAGIC BOX

Once upon a time, there was a poor farmer who lived with his wife. One day, he dug up his field and found a big box. He took it home and showed it to his wife. His wife cleaned the box and kept in their house.
One sunny morning his wife drooped an apple into it. Suddenly, the box began fill up with apples. No matter how many apples were taken out, more apples took their place. So, the farmer and his wife decide to sell the apples and in short time they were able to live quite comfortable.
One day, the farmer dropped a gold coin into the box. At once, apples disappeared and the box began to fill itself with coins. Every day, the farmer and his wife collected hundreds of gold coins from the box. Soon, they became very rich.
Having heard that his son had gone rich, the farmer’s grandfather visited the couple. He was not very strong and he could not go out to work anymore. So, the farmer asked the old man to help him take the money out of the box. When his grandfather told his son that he was tired and wanted to have a rest, the farmer shouted at him, “Why are you so lazy? Why can’t you work harder?”
The old man did not say anything, and continued to work until he fell into the box and suddenly died. At once, the money disappeared and the box began to fill up with dead grandfather.
The farmer had to pull them out and bury them. To do this, he had to spend all the money he had collected. When he had used up all the money, the box broke and the farmer was just as poor as he was before.

4.Why Do The Sun and The Moon Live in the Sky?

Long time ago, there was no day. It was always dark and always summer. This was because the Kachina, a very powerful person had stolen The Sun and The Moon and locked them away in a box. In the light, Coyote and Eagle, two friends wandered the desert. Coyote and Eagle had always hunted together, but Coyote could not hunt anymore because he could not see at night. Coyote suggested that they went to find The Sun and The Moon and made them light up the world. Eagle was worried. He reminded Coyote that The Sun and The Moon were very strong and it was dangerous to trick them. In the end, Eagle agreed to help Coyote. While the Kachina was sleeping Coyote and Eagle crept into their village, stole the Sun and the Moon, and headed into the hills. Coyote told Eagle that he wanted to open the box containing the Sun and the Moon but Eagle said no. They must wait until their travels and open it with their eyes closed. Coyote grumbled. He couldn’t wait to see what was in the box. Finally, he grew so curious that he threw it open. The light of the Sun was so bright that it blinded Coyote’s eyes. The Sun and the Moon laughed and flew far away, up into the sky where they are today.

5.WHY  ARE PEOPLE DWARF ?

Generally most of the people are of normal height, but sometimes we come across people who are exceptionally tall or small. People who are exceptionally small are called dwarfs. In circus you must have seen such dwarfs who entertain you.
Do you know why some people lack normal height ? The growth of a person depends on many factors. Heredity plays an important role in determining the height of a man or a woman. Children of tall parents will be tall while dwarf parents will have dwarf children. In Africa, tribes such as the Watusi and the Masai have many men in 200 cm tall. At the same time, there are Pygmy tribes in Africa, whose people are about 130 cm. These variations are due to heredity only.
Disease is also a reason causing dwarf ness. There are cases of dwarf ness in which head and trunk are normal in size, but arms and legs are short. This is caused by disease of cartilage. A normal body skeleton increases in length during childhood and adolescence because cartilage changes into bone at the growing ends of the bones. Disease of the cartilage prevents arms and legs from growing to a normal size.
Dwarf ness is often caused by the lack of hormones produced by pituitary gland. The under activity of pituitary gland during childhood does not allow the body to grow in normal manner. This type of dwarf ness can be treated by injecting hormones. Too much or too little is also determined by some disorder in adrenal, pituitary, thyroid and male and female sex glands ( testes and ovaries).

6.The Four Brothers and The Lost Camel
Four brothers, who were all good at tracking, met an Arab who asked them if they had seen his missing camel.
The four brothers asked the Arab whether the camel had lost its tail and wanted to knoe if it was bearing a sack of grain on one side and a jar of honey on the other.
To his surprise all the questions were true about his camel. And this made the Arab convinced that they were the thieves. So she brought them before a judge.
            But the explanation was simple.
The first brother began, “The camel had only gazed on the grass on one side of the path, so it must be blind in the other eye. One of its hoof prints was less marked than the others, and that means it must be lame in one foot”.
“As for me”, said the second brother, ‘I noticed that all its dropping were in one heap, instead of being spread around as usually happens, so I thought that this camel must be missing its tail”.
“On one side”, explained the third brother, “some wheat grains had fallen on the path and the ants were carrying them away. On the other side of the path, the flies were sucking at the drops of honey”.
There upon the judge freed the four brothers, and took them into his own services.
